Why the Creative Arts Emmys Matter (Analysis)
Within the most sensational snubs of the season, Showtime's The Borgias was overlooked for that drama series Emmy. This may be because -- since it's Oscar-nominated director Neil Jordan told The Hollywood Reporter last spring -- the splashiest, goriest tales from the Renaissance pope's scandalous reign were being saved for that show's second season. Borgias' greatest rival, Cinemax's Bet on Thrones, sensibly did the alternative and stepped into its still-more difficult story, frontloading the gore. It stole Borgias' costume-epic thunder and gained 13 Emmy noms, including best drama series.our editor recommendsChuck Lorre, Matthew Weiner to provide at Creative Arts Emmys (Exclusive)ReelzChannel to Air Creative Arts EmmysEmmys 2011: '30 Rock' Director Recalls Live Episode Challenges and 'SNL' Parallels (Q&A)Emmys 2011: Julia Stiles' First Nom 'Icing on Cake' After 'Dexter' Guest Star GigWhy 'The Office' Showrunner Is Ready for additional Cast People to Exit Show (Q&A)Emmys 2011: 'Justified's' Margo Martindale on 'Cloud Nine' About Nom (Q&A) But because of the Creative Arts ceremony, this season's Emmy game isn't over for Borgias. And like nine of Thrones' 13 noms, five of Borgias' six potential Emmys is going to be passed out in the Creative Arts Honours on Sept. 10 and telecast on ReelzChannel on Sept. 17, each day prior to the primary Primetime Emmy Honours telecast on Fox -- reinforcing that Emmy's redheaded stepchild is probably not as sexy, but she's just like important. PHOTOS: Emmy Nominations 2011: Snubs and Shockers Talking about redheads, it had been Emmy reality champion and former Creative Arts host Kathy Griffin who notoriously nicknamed them "the Schmemmys." However the black-tie event carries a lot more weight for challengers than most imagine. It essentially is available to shorten the primary Emmy telecast to some workable length by giving less-glamorous, perhaps more-gifted talents on another evening (having a soupcon of stars tossed in therefore it's not only a nongorgeous gaggle of drab prodigies with sensible footwear, such as the Company directors Guild Honours). VIDEOS: Emmy Roundtable: Comedy Stars Centered on tech groups but additionally including guest stars and reality hosts, Creative Arts is how a huge most of Emmys are granted. For instance, from the 104 noms this season that permit Cinemax to stay Emmy's greatest hog, 75 have been in groups that'll be granted throughout the Creative Arts telecast only 29 take presctiption Fox's more-viewed Primetime Emmy telecast. Remove her Creative Arts Emmys, and Cinemax leader of documentary programming Sheila Nevins wouldn't be the planet's greatest Emmy champion (22 and counting, based on the academy). VIDEOS: Emmy Roundtable: Drama Stars "The primetime honours hand out 26 honours in three hrs," states Spike Johnson Junior., producer from the Creative Arts ceremony for 17 years. "We hand out 76 honours in three hrs and fifteen minutes. Which year, we now have large-title nominees." That's without a doubt: Rhianna (variety special on her Cinemax concert "Monster Ball"), Justin Timberlake (guest star for Saturday Evening Live) and Gwyneth Paltrow (guest actress for Glee) are simply three. Additionally to his nomination for pointing the pilot of Cinemax's Boardwalk Empire, Martin Scorsese is perfect for up for any Creative Arts Emmy for nonfiction pointing (PBS' Instructions to Elia/Reflecting on Kazan). If nominated, can they come? "When they're willing, we'll send a bus!" states Johnson. Related Subjects Emmy Honours Honours 1 2 3 4 next last Transformers 3 Online Free

'The Real World' Sued for Failing to Blur 'Shadow Dancers' (Video)
Those who watch reality television are accustomed to a good deal of pixellation. Producers often choose to blur out offensive body parts, T-shirt logos and of course, the faces of anybody who refuses to sign a release form. But does the blurring go far enough? Maybe, if the Global Creative Group gets its way. The company has just filed a lawsuit against the producers of MTV's The Real World, including Viacom and Bunim/Murray Productions, over some background material that very few people would have ever guessed was copyrighted. GCG (also known as Farren Music America) produces a highly specialized kind of entertainment content -- silhouetteimages of women dancing. The company calls these images"Shadow Dancers," seen in the video below, which are sold to VJs, DJs, bar and club owners, party planners and nighttime establishments. Guess who likes to party at nighttime establishments? Real World cast members, of course, including the various folk who appeared on the New Orleans-set season of the long-running series in 2010. The show employs some really good lawyers, who have crafted one hell of a contract for cast-members so as to escape any liability on things like rape, death, and STDs. Unfortunately, the lawyers forgot about the risk of background "Shadow Dancers." According to a lawsuit filed in California, GCG has "invested substantial money, time, effort, and creative talent to protect and properly develop its copyrighted materials." GCG believes that failure to blur out those "Shadow Dancers" during several episodes of the show constitutes copyright infringement. The company says it approached producers about a license to display the copyrighted material. GCG wanted to charge $100,000 for a five-year term. MTV rejected the offer, according to the complaint, saying the material shown was de minimis (legal speak for "Are you f-- kidding me?") and thus, a fair use of copyrighted material. Now, Viacom is facing a lawsuit that seeks maximum statutory damages up to $150,000 per infringement (2 episodes, repeats ad nauseum, you do the math), unjust profits from the show, an injunction and legal fees. Blur away. E-mail: eriqgardner@yahoo.com Twitter: @eriqgardner The Real World

Fox Wishing It's the X Step to Remain on Top (Analysis)
FOX If Fox entertainment leader Kevin Reilly looked a little more enjoyable facing the country's television experts on Friday, it's while he finally has a couple of his most harmful weapons in pocket. He also appeared very certain that the mess which was Glee this past year is going to be much more focused this year, and that he's happy about his comedy development, joking he's stated that before but this time around it's true. Now all Reilly (and Fox) needs is its that to sort out based on plan. So it most likely won't. But he's clearly got a reasonable toolbox now to create a quite strong return dash to No. 1. Whether he will get there inside a smooth or bumpy fashion remains to appear. THR's Summer time TCA Coverage Both harmful weapons now holstered are Simon Cowell's ambitious The X Factor series and also the Steven Spielberg-connected Terra Nova, both postponed very slightly for various reasons (though a lot more than slightly within the situation of Terra Nova). The first kind premieres on Sept. 21 and also the latter on Sept. 26. If individuals remove, be careful. Because Fox routinely begins gradually within the fall after which goes all Gladiator on everyone in midseason with The American Idol Show. Although nobody at Fox stated a thing about this, you are able to wager there is a secret little goal in your mind after winning no. 1 title again within the 18-49 demo, which would be to also win in overall audiences, something CBS does routinely and isn't shy about saying so. Were Fox to obtain both, well, I'd enjoy being Reilly's agent when he applies to the re-up. For advantages within the fall, Fox has got the wonderful New Girl just as one breakout hit. There's enormous hype for that afformentioned large guns (though In my opinion that microscopic attention works against Terra Nova). Fox returns last season's best newcomer comedy, Raising Hope within the timeslot after New Girl. For the disadvantages, the animated series Allen Gregory is really a mystery because experts only have seen clips, not really a full episode, and individuals clips haven't been particularly encouraging.I Dispise My Teenage Daughter only will get one factor right -- using "hate" within the title. PHOTOS: 'Terra Nova': Never-Before-Seen Photos from Behind the curtain When the network wants House to possess its final season be next one -- and you will find certainly tea leaves that may be read for the reason that direction -- then there'd be ample time for you to refresh the drama for any rankings-magnet exit story. Couple by using Reilly's promise that Glee could be more focused plus return-to-fundamentals (read: less large title cameos, less tributes, hopefully less baffling detours), then it will likely be harder to place the weak rivets within the armor. Consistent Bones got a election of confidence to have an eighth season as well as Fringe got Reilly's passionate support. Could it be really that rosy? Absolutely not. If Terra Nova tanks, that's like burning piles of cash inside a public square, and it also adds embarrassment. If X Factor doesn't use large, bad press follows. If X Factor (as well as NBC's The Voice) waters down audience curiosity about another season of Idol, there's another hands-wringing moment. Glee producers Ryan Murphy and Kaira Falchuk may spend a lot of time on the American Horror Story at sister cable funnel Forex (or basically expend energy getting their tales straight concerning the direction of Glee). However, midseason series Alcatraz has good buzz and also the Finder is really a Bones spin-off. Odds you will find positive for both. STORY: On Set With 'Terra Nova': 8 Secrets Revealed From TV's Most Ambitious Fall Show Previously when Reilly has addressed the tv Experts Association, he's been a straight shooter as well as someone to philosophize about whe the network is incorporated in the landscape. Rarely does he boast. However, you be aware of guy is feeling confident when he arrives and states this: "I seem like we are looking at a hot hands this season. You realize, within this job, you type of play that which you got, which year feels as though a very potent crop," he stated. "I'll make a real conjecture before we begin, that is I actually do believe that FOX will have success in each and every genre the coming year and the opportunity of breakout success in individuals genres. I consider the span of our season, and I have looked whatsoever another competitive product, and I like the way in which we are situated, and that i can't watch for a few of these shows to obtain about the air." That's a guy who's relaxed, people. CBS, do you consider he's boasting? Because through the seem from it, you're in his sights. Fox Boss: Glee Spin-Off "Still in the Wind," Bones and House Fates Not Decided
Cory Monteith, Lea Michele, Chris Colfer Let's get this straight: Three Gleeks will graduate, and a possible spin-off to Glee isn't dead yet. Kevin Reilly, Fox's entertainment president, made attempts to set the record straight about the numerous conflicting stories about Glee lately - that creator Ryan Murphy spilled unfounded plot secrets; that actor Chris Colfer found out he, along with Lea Michele and Cory Monteith, were the ones graduating via Twitter; and that the spin-off would be scrapped. "The spin-off was in the wind and is still is in the wind," Reilly told critics at the fall previews on Friday. "We haven't said we're not doing it. ... Ryan did talk to all the actors about it. I think the public nature of it took everybody a little by surprise. Ryan himself has said that he probably regrets kind of talking about it at that point because in the interim we had decided to really focus on this year. ... We decided, 'Let's revisit that in the back end of this year when it should be visited.'" Glee's Ryan Murphy: None of the actors were fired ... or found out they were fired on Twitter According to Reilly, Season 3 will reset the musical series, returning to character-driven plots and doing away with many of the gimmicks that critics have felt detract from Glee's original appeal. That's the plan... for the beginning of the season at least. "There's not going to be any big guest stars, there's not going to be any big tribute numbers," Reilly said. "We're focusing on our core characters and relationships. They have incredibly clean arcs. There will be a graduation at the end. We know the three characters that will be graduating. How that's going to play out I'm not going to say. ... Competition will be alive and well and driving to that graduation and what that means. Darren Criss is now in the show. You will have the winner of The Glee Project joining at some point down the road." According to Reilly, it's Murphy's rather energetic and enthusiastic mind that led him to blurt out his possible ideas for the end of the season and the spin-off. "I think in the middle of Ryan's creativity, this got out and I think the second it did, all of us were just a little surprised on how it took on a life of its own," said Reilly. "This is something that was probably a two-day issue that somehow is taking on a bigger life." As for Murphy and the other Glee producers also creating and launching the new FX drama American Horror Story this fall, Reilly doesn't feel that their second gig will hurt Glee production or storytelling. "Glee was [originally] produced by three people, written by three people," said Reilly. "This is the first year that Glee will have a staff around them and they're in a great place in their material. Of all of my concerns, that team managing two shows at once is not one of them." First look: Ryan Murphy's "Psychosexual thriller" American Horror Story: It's no Glee! In other Fox matters unrelated to Glee, Reilly was up front about having very little news to announce. Here are the highlights of what else was discussed: American Idol - "I wanted to start with ready-made headlines for you, maybe like confirm Jennifer Lopez or something. No such luck there." Bones - "We haven't had any discussions yet [about a Season 8]. I think the producer would like to keep it going and we'd like to keep it going. ... We're going to revisit that later on in the year. We've been pretty darn happy with the performance of Bones on Thursday night. As CSI was fading, Bones was looking as resilient as ever. That's a really valuable show for us." House - "I can't confirm that it's in its last season. We've talked pretty publicly that there's potential for that. Hugh [Laurie] was mulling it, the producers are. ...We're going to revisit this later in the fall and decide if this is the last year on Fox or not. Universalwill have the decision of whether they would like to try to keep the show going somewhere else. The producers may make that decision. But my sense is that this is also a show that wants to stay critically vibrant and go out strong and not limp along for four more years doing the vestige of what it was." Bones scoop: Meet the Jeffersonian's new squintern Fringe - "One of the good things about having a strong network is you can support creative shows that deserve to be on the air. These guys have been doing extraordinary work. It was really one of the great victories for us last season. We were cheering the Friday night victory for Fringe. ... I don't expect explosive growth but if Fringe can do exactly what it did last year, we're going to be very, very happy with it." Breaking In - "We said at the upfront that we're planning to do a four-comedy block in the spring. ... I think as part of that four-comedy block it still has a shot. They've agreed to extend an option, so we've kept it alive. You know what? Stranger things have happened. We've not ordered anything right now, but who knows? Family Guy was canceled once. Seinfeld started out with four episodes, so you never know. We're going to revisit what makes up that four-comedy block a little later in the fall and then we'll officially look into Breaking In."

Andrew Cooper/Summit Entertainment Summit Entertainment isn't kidding around in the anti-piracy efforts about the Twilight Saga: Breaking Beginning.
